Abbas Kiarostami to receive award at Asia Pacific Screen Awards

Late Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami has been scheduled to receive his 77th award from the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA).

Kiarostami will receive his 77th international award on the occasion of his 77th birthday.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is to be dedicated to the Iranian director as a special award for the first time in the history of Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

The veteran Iranian filmmaker who passed away on July 4, 2016, following a heart attack at the age of 76, was also honored at this year’s Oscars ceremony in Los Angeles.

He is mostly known as a screenwriter, film editor, art director and producer as well as a poet, photographer, painter, illustrator, and graphic designer.

Kiarostami has won many awards including the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Festival in 1997 for his film ‘Taste of Cherry’.

The late writer-director has been widely hailed as a pioneer of the Iranian New Wave.

Kiarostami’s last film ‘Like Someone in Love’ (2012), a romantic drama set in Japan, was also nominated for a Palme d’Or at Cannes.

Established in 2007 and headquartered in Brisbane, APSA is an international cultural program driven by Brisbane City Council through Brisbane Marketing endorsed by UNESCO and International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF).

The 11th edition of APSA will present the awards to the winners in Brisbane, Australia, on November 23.
